Tweets are dropping, emotions are rising, friendships are being broken and names are being made. All of these and more are things that happen in this current world of technology, where social media has become the standard of measuring success for so many people and an hiding place for some others.
You will agree with me that cyber bullying is one thing that is very common in the world of social media these days and it poses a lot of concern because it has painfully increased the level of depression because many people put themselves under unnecessary pressure, based on what they see and what people say to and about them. There are so many people who go out on social media to say a lot of things about people and things, yet these are people who cannot come out there physically to ring a bell, let alone make a statement. These ones are the ones who use social media as an escape from their irredeemable low self-esteem.
It is funny how so many people hide under the umbrella of “freedom of speech” to display their uncouth nature and come out again to say everyone has the right to expression. That may be very true though, but there is an unsaid rule about life that supports sensitivity and compassion for your fellow human. As a matter of fact, it is right to say that cyber bullying is an example of emotional abuse. I mean, you just don’t come out there to tongue lash the effort and businesses of people because they are striving to make a living for themselves. If you don’t like what they do, keep your opinion to yourself, if you don’t agree with their opinion of things, state yours without throwing tantrums.
Criticism doesn’t involve destroying effort; rather, it is an intelligent analysis of a particular thing, stating the good, bad and ugly. It actually amuses me how people have so much expectation from celebrities, forgetting that they are first humans before they are celebrities. As a matter of fact, they have been able to rise to that level, in which you can call them celebrities because they have worked hard for it, and are still working out, dealing with loads of pressures every day. Yet, what they get from some people are depressing and discouraging statements in their comments section. Now, this is not to say people cannot talk about their disappointments over certain things, but there are mature ways to go about them.
Now to our celebrities, it is important that you know that success comes with a lot of responsibilities and until you are ready to carry those responsibilities, you are not ready for success. You shouldn’t expect everyone to like you or your style of whatever they are doing, which is why you are not the only one in your line of business. So, pick what can make you better in whatever they say, discard the rest and focus on giving your loyal fans the best of you. Winston Churchill said “You will not reach your destination if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks”.
This means that as you journey through stardom, you must develop a tough skin and grow a high level of tolerance and maturity. Also importantly, it is so disgracing when some of you think you can use the little power you have to oppress anyone who offends you. We have enough fights against the power drunk officers; we do not want to add our loved celebrities to the list. So, if you are of the habit of slapping, hitting or using any form of violence towards anyone, now is the time to stop it.
In all of these, one question we all should ask ourselves when we are about to make certain decisions or say certain thing is;
If tables were turned, how would I feel?
